Chapter 38- THE DEATH CERTIFICATE WITH NO DOCTORMercer brought us to a secure office before sunrise.

Emma slept on a couch beneath Natalie’s coat while I examined my father’s death certificate.
There was no attending physician listed.
The funeral home had closed three months after the burial. The hospice agency had never existed.
I remembered the closed casket.
Grant had held me as I cried. Vivian had arranged every detail.
“You knew something was wrong,” I told Mercer.
“We suspected your father entered federal protection.”
“For what?”
“He was preparing to testify against a network supplying defective medical equipment to government hospitals.”
The Holloways had inherited the network after my mother discovered it. My father had spent years gathering evidence, then vanished after an attempt on his life.
“Why didn’t he contact me?”
Mercer hesitated.
“Because there was a leak inside the investigation.”
I looked through the glass at the officers questioning Grant.
“The police captain?”
“We thought so.”
“You don’t anymore?”
Mercer closed the folder.

“The leak knew you called us tonight.”
