Chapter 37- VIVIAN’S FINAL INSTRUCTIONVivian requested to speak with me alone.

Mercer refused, but she shouted across the street.
“Claire, your mother knew!”
The words stopped me.
Vivian saw my reaction and smiled faintly.
“She knew what the company transported. She knew where the money came from.”
“My mother died when I was sixteen.”
“She died because she tried to leave.”
Grant shouted at Vivian to stop talking.
That was the first time I saw genuine panic pass between them.
Mercer ordered agents to separate mother and son.
Vivian fought hard enough to lose one pearl earring in the snow.
Before they led her away, she looked at me.
“Ask your father why he changed the beneficiary.”
“My father is dead.”
Vivian laughed.
“No, Claire. He isn’t.”
For six years, I had visited an empty grave believing cancer had taken the last person who loved me unconditionally.
