Chapter 22- BRIAN FINALLY TELLS THE TRUTH

Brian testified through a secured video connection from prison.
When his face appeared on the courtroom screen, Donna stared at him with an expression I had never seen before.
Fear.
Brian admitted forging my signature. He admitted using Lily’s identity and helping hide records inside my father’s house.
Then the prosecutor asked who had designed the investment scheme.
Brian looked directly at his mother.
“She did.”
Donna shook her head slowly.
“Brian,” she whispered.
The judge ordered her to remain silent.
Brian explained that Donna had begun recruiting relatives before the construction company existed. She created false projections, identified family property that could be used as collateral and convinced him that money could always be moved before anyone noticed.
“Why did you accept responsibility alone?” the prosecutor asked.
“My mother said she would protect Lily.”
I felt sick.
“How?”
“She said Emily would lose the house and wouldn’t be able to afford custody. Then Lily would live with her.”
Donna stood so suddenly that her chair fell backward.
“He is lying!”
Two deputies moved toward her.
Brian did not stop.
“The night of the dinner, my mother told me that if Emily left before signing, everything would collapse. When Emily picked up Lily, I blocked the door.”
“And then?”
“I hit my wife while she was holding our daughter.”
His voice cracked.
No excuse followed.
No attempt to soften it.
“I did it,” he said. “But my mother created the situation, and I chose to become the man she needed.”
Donna was crying now.
Not quietly.
“You ungrateful coward,” she shouted at the screen. “I built everything for you!”
Brian stared at her.
“No. You built it around me so you’d have someone else to blame.”
The judge ordered Donna removed from the courtroom.
As deputies guided her away, she looked back at me.
Not at Brian.
Not at Richard.
May you like
At me.
Because I was the person who had finally refused to carry her version of the truth.
