Chapter 34- EMMA WALKED OUT FIRSTThe police threatened to enter the house.

Mr. Reeves wanted us to wait for Agent Mercer, but I knew how the scene would look if officers found us hiding with boxes of financial records.
I opened the front door.
Emma stepped out beside me holding her tablet against her chest.
Grant stood across the street in a winter coat. Vivian was behind him, wrapped in a blanket for dramatic effect.
“My baby!” Grant shouted.
Emma recoiled.
One officer ordered me to release her hand.
“I’m not holding her.”
Emma raised her tablet.
“My dad locked us in the house.”
Grant’s face remained calm.
“She’s confused. Claire has been putting ideas in her head.”
Emma pressed play.
Vivian’s voice filled the frozen street.
“Peter, lock the door. Nobody leaves until Claire gives Grant that phone.”
Silence followed.
The younger officer looked toward Grant.
The older officer did not.
He reached for my arm.
“Mrs. Holloway, turn around.”

Natalie stepped from the house.
“Before you arrest her,” she said, “ask Grant why your captain’s name appears in his payment ledger.”
