Chapter 28- THE WINDOW GRANT FORGOTGrant reached us before Peter decided what to do.

He grabbed my wrist.

“Give me the phone.”

I drove my elbow into his chest.

He stumbled backward, shocked less by the pain than by the fact that I had fought back.

For twelve years, Grant had trained me to become smaller whenever his voice grew louder. He had never imagined what would happen when fear stopped working.

I pulled Emma behind me.

“Open the door.”

“This is my house,” Grant said.

“No. It belongs to the family trust.”

His eyes sharpened.

I had not been supposed to know that.

Vivian appeared in the hallway holding a flashlight.

“Claire, don’t make this worse.”

“You locked a child inside a dark house.”

“We’re protecting the family.”

“From what?”

Vivian looked at Grant.

That single glance gave me the answer.

They were not protecting the family from an outsider.

They were protecting themselves from me.

I grabbed Emma’s hand and ran toward the kitchen window Grant always forgot to secure.
