Chapter 21- CHLOE PRESSES PLAY
The visitation hearing became a criminal evidence hearing.
Donna sat beside her attorney wearing gray instead of pale blue. Her face was composed, but her hands trembled whenever the prosecutor mentioned the school.
Chloe took the witness stand.
Donna refused to look at her.
The prosecutor asked about the night of the dinner.
Chloe described seeing Lily barely able to hold up her head. She described Brian blocking the door and Donna removing Lily’s coat from the chair.
“Why did you record?” the prosecutor asked.
“Because everyone kept acting like what was happening was normal.”
Donna’s attorney stood for cross-examination.
“You disliked your uncle, correct?”
“I disliked what he did.”
“And Emily encouraged you to save these recordings?”
“No.”
“Did she promise to help pay for college?”
“No.”
“Did anyone offer you money?”
Chloe looked toward Donna.
“Yes.”
The courtroom became silent.
Donna’s attorney stopped moving.
“Who?”
“Grandma Donna.”
Chloe took out her phone.
With the judge’s permission, the prosecutor played the recording.
Donna’s voice filled the courtroom.
Delete it, and your uncle will make sure college is paid for.
Then came Chloe’s younger voice.
Lily could have died.
And Donna’s answer:
Then Emily should have signed the papers when she was told.
Richard lowered his head in the gallery.
Carol began crying.
Donna remained still until the recording ended.
Then she leaned toward her attorney and whispered urgently.
He did not answer her.
The prosecutor displayed the financial statements, the custodial account created in Lily’s name and the recording from behind the pantry wall.
For the first time, Donna’s entire story existed in one room.
Not as a misunderstanding.
