Chapter 11- DONNA’S NEW STORY

Donna began telling her story before we found the key.

She posted photographs of Lily on social media with captions about “grandparents erased by bitter parents.” She attended church with Carol and cried during prayer requests. She told relatives that I had manipulated Brian into confessing to crimes he had not committed.

Then she gave an interview to a local family-values podcast.

Maya sent me the recording.

Donna spoke softly.

“My son made mistakes,” she said. “But Emily has used those mistakes to punish an entire family. My granddaughter once adored me. Now she has been taught to fear my name.”

The host asked about the hospital incident.

Donna sighed.

“There was confusion. Everyone believed Lily had a seasonal virus. Emily became emotional, and Brian reacted badly. One terrible moment should not erase years of love.”

She never mentioned grabbing my arm.

She never mentioned blocking the door.

She never mentioned that Dr. Patel believed Lily had been hours away from septic shock.

By the end of the interview, strangers were leaving comments beneath Donna’s photograph.

A grandmother deserves rights.

Children need both sides of their family.

Mothers shouldn’t use kids as weapons.

I wanted to respond with the video.

Maya stopped me.

“Court first,” she said. “Public opinion is loud, but it is not evidence.”

That evening, Rachel called.

Her voice trembled.

“Mom asked me to say you were unstable after the divorce.”

“What did you tell her?”

“That she should be ashamed.”

There was a long silence.

Then Rachel said, “She told Carol that you stole money from the receivership.”

“That’s impossible.”

“I know. But she’s creating explanations for whatever is in that lockbox.”

Before we ended the call, Rachel warned me that Donna was trying to find the new owners of my father’s house.

Brian had been right.

Donna knew the wall had been opened.

Now we had to reach the box before she did.
