Chapter 31- THE MESSAGE FROM INSIDE THE HOUSEEmma’s tablet chimed.

A message appeared from an unknown number.
They know where you are.
Mr. Reeves immediately switched off the desk lamp.
Headlights swept across his front windows.
Emma clutched my arm.
A second message arrived.
Back door. Thirty seconds.
I did not know whether it was help or a trap.
Then the sender attached a photograph.
It showed Vivian standing inside our dining room beside two uniformed officers. Grant was speaking while Peter held my purse.
Underneath the photograph were six words:
They are reporting that you kidnapped Emma.
My knees nearly buckled.
Grant was her father. If the police believed I had attacked him, fled with our daughter and stolen financial documents, he could turn my escape into a crime.
“Who sent this?” Mr. Reeves asked.
Before I could answer, someone knocked softly on the back door.
Three knocks.
A pause.
Then two more.
Emma looked at me.
“That’s Aunt Natalie’s signal.”
May you like
Natalie was Grant’s sister.
And she had spent twelve years pretending not to see what her family did to me.
