Chapter 6 - Mason Had Been Protecting Rachel TooMason didn’t deny wanting Rachel out of the car.

“I thought something was wrong.”

Rachel crossed her arms.

“With my driving?”

“Your reaction times were inconsistent.”

Rachel looked offended.

“I was exhausted.”

“You nearly missed two braking points in practice.”

Frank looked at her.

“You never told me that.”

Rachel looked away.

Mason had recommended that Rachel undergo a medical evaluation before racing again.

Logan refused.

“He said sponsors would panic if people thought Rachel had a health issue.”

Frank’s jaw tightened.

Rachel remembered Mason telling her she didn’t need to prove anything by racing exhausted.

At the time, she had heard criticism.

Now she understood it as concern.

Then Mason admitted something else.

The morning of Rachel’s crash, the inspection seal near the brake reservoir had looked slightly out of position.

Not broken.

Just moved.

“I assumed Tyler had checked it.”

“Did he?”

“No.”

Frank looked toward Tyler’s station.

Then Mason pulled up the overnight work schedule.

One crew member had volunteered to remain late.

Rachel’s cousin, Dean Harwood.

Frank stared at the name.

Dean had recently been warned that his place on next season’s team was uncertain.

Suddenly another person had a reason to resent Rachel.
