Chapter 2 - What Rachel Hadn’t Told Her FatherRachel was released from the hospital that evening with bruised ribs and a sprained wrist.

Frank drove her home.

Logan followed separately.

Halfway there, Rachel noticed her father’s silence.

“What happened at the garage?”

Frank told her.

The brake line.

The clean cut.

Logan’s badge.

2:13 a.m.

Rachel did not look shocked enough.

Frank noticed.

“You knew he went there?”

“No.”

“Then what was that look?”

Rachel stared through the windshield.

For three years, she and Logan had operated Harwood Racing together.

Rachel drove.

Logan handled business, sponsors, and team management.

Publicly, they looked like the perfect racing couple.

Privately, their marriage had been deteriorating.

Rachel had recently been invited to test for a national driver-development program.

If she accepted, she might leave Harwood Racing.

And possibly leave Logan professionally too.

“He didn’t want me to do the test,” Rachel admitted.

“Why?”

“He said the team couldn’t survive without me.”

Frank glanced at her.

“Could it?”

Rachel gave a tired laugh.

“That depends on which set of numbers Logan shows you.”

She had recently discovered late supplier payments, heavy business-card balances, and sponsor money that seemed to disappear almost as quickly as it arrived.

Their largest sponsor, Caldwell Industrial, had also asked Rachel whether she intended to remain with the team next season.

Frank understood immediately.

If Rachel left, the sponsor might leave too.

Logan had a reason to keep his wife inside Harwood Racing.

But that still didn’t explain why he would sabotage the car she drove.
