My husband’s mistress hurled a high heel at my five-year-old’s forehead, then ate cake while ordering her to scrub the floor or starve.

Camila’s attorney contacted Denise.

Camila wanted to negotiate a truthful statement, but only if Elena agreed not to pursue a civil claim against her.

Elena refused.

“You don’t trade accountability for useful facts,” she said.

Denise agreed but advised her not to reject cooperation completely. Camila’s information could clarify Adrian’s role. Any criminal consequences would be decided separately.

They met in a conference room with attorneys present.

Camila no longer looked polished. The navy suit from the foyer hung loosely at her shoulders.

She did not apologize at first.

She explained.

Adrian told her Elena had agreed to a private separation. He said Elena traveled constantly, ignored Valeria, and used the marriage to control his company. He promised Camila they would live in the Myers Park house after Elena signed financial documents.

He also said Valeria needed to accept her before a custody evaluator visited.

“There was no evaluator scheduled that day,” Denise said.

Camila stared at Adrian’s messages spread across the table.

“He told me the process server would report how Elena behaved.”

“A process server delivers papers,” Denise replied. “He wasn’t there to evaluate anyone.”

Camila understood then that Adrian had used her ignorance.

The balloons, cake, formal clothing, and tea service had been intended to create a picture of Camila already occupying Elena’s domestic role. Adrian instructed her to keep Valeria in the foyer until Elena arrived.

“He said Valeria would cry,” Camila said. “He said Elena would attack me if she saw me comforting her.”

“You weren’t comforting her,” Elena said.

Camila’s face tightened.

“No.”

She admitted withholding lunch after Valeria refused to call her “Mama C.” She admitted ordering the child to scrub the floor and throwing the heel.

“Why?”

Camila looked at the table.

“Because she kept saying her mother was coming home. Adrian had spent months telling me you never really came home.”

The motive explained the resentment.

It did not reduce the harm.

Camila then produced ordinary messages from her phone. Nothing had been secretly recorded. Adrian’s instructions appeared in texts, calendar invitations, and financial promises.

One message from the previous week read:

If Elena reacts the way she always does, I’ll have the leverage to finish both agreements.

Camila had assumed he meant custody and the house.

Denise asked what the second agreement was.

Camila opened an email Adrian had forwarded by mistake.
