Chapter 3 - THE STORY ADRIAN WROTE

Adrian arrived at the hospital wearing the gray suit he used for lender meetings.
He did not ask about Valeria’s injury first.
He asked why Elena had called the police.
“You had another option,” he said in the family consultation room. “You could’ve handled this privately.”
“Camila threw a shoe at our daughter.”
“She says it slipped.”
“She told Valeria she wouldn’t eat.”
Adrian looked toward the closed door.
“Camila lost her temper. That doesn’t erase what you’ve been doing for months.”
Elena placed the custody petition on the table.
“What exactly have I been doing?”
According to Adrian, she worked too much, traveled without considering Valeria, and used silence as punishment during marital arguments. He cited one night when Elena locked herself in the guest room after discovering the affair.
He omitted that he had stood outside the door for an hour demanding she surrender her business passwords.
He also cited a school pickup Elena missed.
He omitted that he had changed the shared calendar after she left for work.
The petition’s facts were recognizable.
Its meaning had been rearranged.
Adrian’s attorney joined by phone and advised both parents to avoid discussing the case. A child-protection worker informed them that Valeria would remain with Elena temporarily while the agency reviewed Camila’s access to the child and Adrian’s role in arranging it.
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“You’re letting one accident decide where she sleeps?”
“No,” the worker said. “We’re responding to an injured child who says food was withheld as punishment.”
Adrian turned to Elena.
“You’ve wanted to take her from me since you found out about Camila.”
Elena had wanted him to leave.
She had never asked to reduce his parenting time.
That distinction no longer protected her.
That evening, she took Valeria to her sister Maren’s townhouse in Dilworth. She packed only clothes, medication, school items, and the yellow blanket Valeria had carried since infancy.
Her attorney, Denise Harper, advised her not to return to the house alone.
The next morning, Elena learned Adrian had changed the alarm code and told the school she was not authorized to pick up Valeria without written confirmation.
He had no court order allowing that.
The school corrected the record after Denise called.
But the attempt revealed something important.
Adrian was not waiting for the custody case to give him control.
He was behaving as if he had already won.
Then Elena’s office manager called.

Adrian had tried to transfer money from Elena’s design studio to Vale Urban Development at 8:12 that morning.
The amount was $460,000.
