Chapter 2 - THE PARTY THAT NEVER EXISTED

Paramedics examined Valeria at the house and recommended evaluation at a pediatric emergency department. The cut did not require stitches, but the swelling needed monitoring.

A police officer separated Elena and Camila.

Camila admitted throwing the shoe but insisted she aimed at the wall.

Valeria whispered, “She looked at me first.”

The officer documented both statements and contacted child protective services. Camila was told to leave the property while the investigation began.

Then the process server handed Elena a petition requesting temporary custody of Valeria.

Adrian had signed it that morning.

The petition accused Elena of abandoning the marital home, behaving unpredictably, and exposing Valeria to “frequent emotional outbursts.” It claimed Adrian had created a stable household with the help of a trusted family friend.

Camila’s name did not appear.

At the hospital, Elena read the filing while Valeria slept against her shoulder.

She had spent the previous ten days in Raleigh overseeing the installation of a hotel project for her interior-design firm. Adrian had encouraged her to go. He said the commission could save the studio after two slow quarters.

He also promised Valeria would remain with him and their longtime housekeeper, Rosa.

Rosa had been dismissed the day after Elena left.

Adrian never mentioned it.

Camila moved into the guest room three days later.

Elena had known about the affair for almost two months. She found hotel charges and messages, confronted Adrian, and accepted his claim that it had ended. She delayed filing for separation because her studio had guaranteed part of a loan connected to one of Adrian’s development projects.

If their finances collapsed suddenly, twelve employees could lose their jobs.

Elena told herself she was protecting them.

She had also been protecting the appearance of a family that no longer existed.

Valeria woke while a nurse cleaned the bruise.

“Did Daddy say I was bad?”

“No.”

“He told Miss Camila I make you crazy.”

Elena kept her voice gentle.

“When did he say that?”

“Last night. He said today had to look real.”

The nurse paused.

Elena looked at the balloons visible in the photograph she had taken.

Valeria’s birthday was not until Friday.

Adrian had ordered a cake, decorated the foyer two days early, sent Elena a message saying Valeria missed the doll she had promised, and arranged for custody papers to arrive at the house.

The party had never been for Valeria.

It had been a stage.

The only part Adrian had not controlled was how far Camila would go.
