Chapter 6 - THE COST OF LEAVING

Elena filed for legal separation and temporary custody orders.

The filing became public enough that clients noticed.

One hotel executive postponed a design meeting. A developer asked whether Elena’s studio was financially stable. Two employees requested private conversations about their jobs.

Elena had spent years blending her company with Adrian’s because shared resources appeared efficient. His construction crews built her designs. Her projects gave his company prestige. Their marriage made the arrangement feel permanent.

Now separation threatened both businesses.

Tasha discovered that Adrian’s company had billed Elena’s studio for labor never performed on three model homes. Elena had approved the invoices without examining the staffing records because Adrian told her the money would remain “inside the family.”

Her own carelessness had helped him move cash.

She authorized a forensic review knowing it might expose her poor judgment to clients and lenders.

Maren asked whether she was prepared to lose the studio.

“No.”

“Are you prepared to keep financing Adrian to save it?”

Elena looked through the window at Valeria drawing on the patio.

“No.”

The family court entered short-term orders keeping Valeria with Elena and allowing Adrian supervised contact until the child-protection review was complete. The order did not declare him abusive. It recognized that he had placed Valeria in Camila’s care after receiving warnings about her discipline.

Adrian blamed Elena for making the case public.

During his first supervised visit, he brought Valeria a large stuffed horse and said, “Daddy’s trying to bring you home.”

The supervisor interrupted.

“This is her home right now. Do not discuss the case.”

Valeria stopped touching the toy.

Afterward, she asked Elena whether Maren’s townhouse was only temporary because she had been bad.

Elena realized Adrian could frighten their daughter without raising his voice.

Denise requested therapeutic supervision for future visits.

Adrian opposed it and demanded proof that his words caused harm.

The child therapist provided notes showing that Valeria associated home, food, and parental love with obedience.

The notes also contained a recurring phrase.

“Miss Camila said Daddy chose us, but only one of us could stay.”

Elena read the sentence alone in Denise’s office.

She had believed Adrian wanted leverage over the house and business.

Valeria’s memory suggested something more personal.

Adrian had allowed Camila and a five-year-old child to believe they were competing for his loyalty.
