Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO PLANNED TO LOSE THEM BOTH
Camila believed Adrian was building a life with her.
Elena believed he was trying to replace her.
Both assumptions gave him too much emotional credit.
The financial records revealed a colder plan.
Two weeks before Elena left for Raleigh, Adrian signed a lease on a furnished condominium in SouthPark. The lease listed only his name. It had one bedroom.
He never intended to move Camila there.
He never intended to remain in the marital house with Valeria either.
The proposed studio sale, the house listing, and the custody petition were designed to solve one problem: Adrian needed cash and negotiating power before his company’s loans came due.
If Elena reacted violently in the foyer, he could seek a protective order, gain temporary control of the house, and pressure her to approve the business sale.
If Camila’s presence became embarrassing, he could describe her as an unstable employee who had overstepped.
The custody filing identified her only as a “family friend” because Adrian never intended to acknowledge their future publicly.
He had promised Camila Elena’s life while arranging to abandon her once she served her purpose.
Three earlier details changed meaning.
Camila’s formal suit was not for an evaluator. Adrian told her photographers might arrive to document the house for sale.
The party was held early because the lender deadline fell on Friday, Valeria’s actual birthday.
The process server was scheduled during Elena’s arrival because Adrian needed a confrontation before the bank’s Monday review.
Valeria’s birthday had been reduced to a deadline.
Camila read the lease and sale timeline in her attorney’s office.
“He said the condo was for us.”
“It wasn’t,” Denise said.
Camila began to cry, then stopped herself.
Elena felt no satisfaction.
A woman could be deceived and still be responsible for hurting a child.
The twist forced Elena into an immediate choice.
Camila offered to provide full testimony about Adrian’s plan, including her own actions, if Elena supported a plea avoiding jail.
Elena could not control the prosecutor. She could submit a victim-impact statement that emphasized accountability without demanding the harshest outcome.
Valeria needed the truth.
She did not need Elena to use punishment as another form of leverage.
Elena agreed to state only what she believed: Camila should accept responsibility, receive treatment, and have no contact with Valeria unless professionals someday considered it safe.
