Chapter 12 - WHAT THEY WERE PROTECTING

The mediation took place in separate rooms until Elena requested one joint session.
Adrian entered with his attorney. Camila attended with hers because parts of the proposed settlement concerned her testimony.
Elena had not seen the three of them together since the affair became known.
Adrian looked first at Camila.
“You had no right to give them private messages.”
Camila laughed once.
“You wrote instructions about using a crying child.”
“I told you to keep the situation calm.”
“You told me to keep her emotional.”
“You were the one who threw the shoe.”
“Yes,” Camila said. “I was.”
The direct admission left him nowhere to redirect the moment.
Elena asked Adrian what he actually wanted.
“My company to survive.”
“And Valeria?”
“I want my daughter.”
“You wanted control over where she lived because it helped you control the house.”
“That isn’t fair.”
“No. It isn’t.”
He stood, then sat again when his attorney touched his sleeve.
Adrian finally admitted the development company was close to default. He had spent fifteen years trying to prove he belonged among wealthier developers who treated him as Elena’s ambitious husband. Every successful project required a larger one afterward.
When the market slowed, he hid the losses.
“I thought if I could get through one quarter, I could fix everything.”
“You used our daughter to buy a quarter,” Elena said.
He turned toward Camila.
“I needed somebody who believed in me.”
Camila’s face hardened.
“You needed somebody you could leave holding the blame.”
Elena then admitted what she had protected.
The studio.
Her employees.
The image of a marriage that made clients trust two family businesses.
She had allowed Adrian access because separating finances would publicly confirm their private failure.
“I chose appearances until Valeria paid for them.”
No one contradicted her.
The mediator presented Adrian with a choice.
He could accept a parenting plan built around therapeutic contact, financial transparency, and an independent evaluation.
Or he could continue seeking control and face the full evidence at a temporary custody hearing.
Adrian asked Elena to meet his eyes.
“Are you really going to let Camila help take my daughter from me?”
Elena looked at the woman who had injured Valeria.
Then at the man who had arranged the room around that injury.
“No one is taking her,” Elena said. “We’re deciding what access you can handle safely.”
May you like
Adrian refused the proposal.
The hearing became unavoidable.
