Chapter 1 - THE RED HEEL

The heel struck Valeria above the eyebrow with a hard, hollow sound.

The five-year-old folded onto the marble floor beside the crumbs of her birthday cake. One hand covered her forehead. The other still held the damp cloth Camila had ordered her to use.

“Clean it right or you don’t eat today,” Camila said.

She lowered herself onto the cream sofa, crossed one leg over the other, and lifted her teacup. Red balloons floated above the foyer. A wrapped doll lay unopened near the staircase.

Valeria cried harder.

“Quiet,” Camila said. “You should be grateful somebody’s teaching you manners.”

The front door opened.

Elena Vale stood in the entry with rain on her black jacket and a second birthday gift beneath her arm. Her husband had told her Valeria’s party had been postponed until Saturday because their daughter had a fever.

Valeria was not sick.

She was on her knees, wiping cake from the floor with her pajama sleeve while blood gathered beneath a swelling bruise.

The gift slipped from Elena’s hand.

“What did you do?”

Camila looked almost relieved to see her.

“She threw food. I corrected her.”

Elena crossed the foyer, pulled Valeria against her chest, and pressed a clean napkin to the injury.

“What kind of woman hurts a little girl and calls it discipline?”

Camila took another sip of tea.

“The kind your husband trusts in his house.”

Elena reached for her phone.

Camila’s calm finally cracked.

“Don’t make this worse. Adrian said you’d come in screaming.”

The sentence stopped Elena more effectively than a threat.

“You knew I was coming?”

Camila glanced toward the hallway leading to Adrian’s office.

Elena called 911 anyway.

She reported the injury, gave the address, and asked for medical assistance. Then she photographed Valeria’s forehead with the child’s face partly turned away.

Camila rose.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.”

“I understand enough.”

“No, you don’t. Adrian said you’d attack me in front of her. He said that was the last thing he needed.”

“For what?”

Before Camila answered, the home intercom chimed.

A man’s voice came from the front gate.

“Mecklenburg County civil process. I have documents for Elena Vale.”

Camila closed her eyes.

Elena looked from the early birthday decorations to the untouched tea service and Camila’s navy suit.

This had not been a private afternoon that turned cruel.

Someone had prepared the room for Elena’s arrival.
