Chapter 11 - THE PART ELENA PLAYED

Camila’s statement damaged Adrian’s custody case and his business defense.

It also exposed Elena’s blind spots.

Several messages showed Adrian discussing financial transfers while Elena responded with phrases such as, “Do what you need to do,” and, “I can’t deal with this before the hotel opens.”

She had not authorized fraud.

She had deliberately avoided understanding the details.

Tasha confirmed that employees tried to warn Elena about duplicate invoices. Elena told them Adrian would correct everything after the next financing round.

Her need to preserve the marriage had become a management decision.

The studio’s lender required an independent financial officer before extending further credit. Elena had to surrender control over spending she once handled alone.

She agreed.

At home, Valeria’s therapist explained that the child had begun arranging her dolls into two families. One doll was always placed outside the house.

“Which doll?” Elena asked.

“The mother.”

Elena wanted to tell Valeria she would never leave again.

The therapist discouraged absolute promises.

“You may travel. She may stay with someone else. Safety comes from reliable plans, not from pretending separation never happens.”

Elena realized she had repeated Adrian’s mistake in a gentler form. She wanted to erase uncertainty instead of teaching Valeria she could survive it.

That evening, she showed Valeria the calendar on the refrigerator.

Blue circles marked Elena’s workdays.

Green circles marked Maren’s pickup days.

A red heart marked therapy.

“If the plan changes, who tells you?” Elena asked.

“You.”

“And Aunt Maren.”

“And Ms. Hall at school.”

Valeria touched Friday’s square.

“My birthday already happened wrong.”

Elena sat beside her.

“Yes.”

“Can I have another one?”

“Yes.”

“Without Miss Camila?”

“Yes.”

“Without Daddy?”

Elena could not answer for the future.

“The next party will be wherever you feel safe. We’ll decide with your therapist.”

Valeria accepted that more easily than Elena expected.

The next morning, Adrian’s attorney proposed mediation. Adrian would withdraw his request for primary custody and accept limited parenting time if Elena withdrew allegations that he had intentionally endangered Valeria.

He also wanted the businesses to settle privately.

The truth had finally damaged his control.

Now he wanted privacy to restore it.
