Chapter 5 - WHAT CAMILA WAS PROMISED

Camila retained a criminal-defense attorney and stopped speaking directly to Elena.

The police report still contained her original admission that she threw the shoe. The paramedic notes recorded Valeria’s statement. Changing the story did not erase either one.

It did, however, make the family case more complicated.

Adrian claimed Elena had frightened Camila into taking responsibility. Camila claimed the shoe struck Valeria only after Elena burst through the door.

Elena’s photographs showed Valeria already injured while Camila sat beside the tea tray, but they did not show how it happened.

Denise focused on facts that did not depend on either adult’s memory.

The cake receipt showed Adrian ordered it three days earlier and requested pickup before noon on Wednesday.

The balloon company received instructions to decorate the foyer by one.

The process server had been told Elena would arrive between two and three.

Adrian’s message asking Elena to bring Valeria’s doll was sent at 1:17.

The emergency call began at 2:26.

The timeline proved planning.

It did not prove Adrian intended Valeria to be harmed.

Rosa, the dismissed housekeeper, provided another piece.

Adrian had fired her after she objected to Camila disciplining Valeria.

“She made the child stand facing the pantry because she spilled juice,” Rosa said. “I told Mr. Vale. He said Camila needed authority if she was going to become part of the family.”

“When was that?”

“The morning after you left for Raleigh.”

Rosa had also heard Adrian tell Camila that Elena would soon sign the house over as part of their separation.

The house was jointly owned.

Elena had agreed to nothing.

Camila had been promised Elena’s bedroom, Elena’s home, and a future role in Valeria’s life. Adrian told her the custody petition was nearly settled and that Elena’s arrival would prove she was unstable.

Camila had entered the afternoon expecting a frightened wife to create the final evidence.

Instead, a crying child had resisted her.

Her cruelty was her own choice.

But the room around it had been built by Adrian.

Denise arranged for Elena to receive belongings from the house with a neutral escort. Inside Adrian’s office, they found empty shelves, a missing computer, and a wastebasket full of shredded papers.

One strip remained readable.

It contained the name of a commercial real-estate broker and the words: marital residence—vacant possession required.

Adrian was not only preparing to remove Elena.

He was preparing to sell the house.
