Chapter 9 - Sabrina Lost Control of Her Own Story

Sabrina was charged over what she did in the church annex.

Not because Ava demanded dramatic punishment.

Because there were witnesses to part of the aftermath, physical evidence in the annex, and Sabrina admitted restraining Ava.

The process was not instant.

Ava gave a statement.

Sabrina obtained counsel.

The church cooperated.

That was all.

Then Sabrina made a mistake.

She began telling mutual acquaintances that Ava had “forgiven Nolan and blamed her instead.”

It was false.

Ava ignored it at first.

Then a parish volunteer called Grace asking whether Ava wanted people to stop “attacking Sabrina online.”

Ava had posted nothing.

Someone else had.

Details of the annex were circulating.

Some portrayed Sabrina as a jealous ex.

Others portrayed Nolan as a serial abuser.

Neither description matched what Ava actually knew.

Ava told both Nolan and Sabrina through counsel that she wanted no public statements made on her behalf.

Nolan obeyed.

Sabrina resisted.

“She gets to disappear into pregnancy while everyone thinks I'm insane?”

Her attorney apparently persuaded her that this was not helping.

The public discussion quieted.

Then Sabrina requested one final private exchange with Ava through lawyers.

Ava declined an in-person meeting.

She accepted a letter.

It was six pages.

Most of it was exactly what Ava expected.

Anger.

Regret.

Resentment.

But one paragraph mattered.

Sabrina admitted she had lied about one thing.

Nolan had not “come back” to her after July.

The coffee meetings were not romantic.

He had not kissed her.

He had not slept with her again.

She had deliberately phrased her statement in the annex so Ava would assume the affair extended into the pregnancy.

Ava reread the line.

The December affair remained real.

So did the marriage betrayal.

But Sabrina had manipulated its timeline to maximize the damage.

That changed something.

Not Nolan’s guilt.

Sabrina’s credibility.

Ava showed Nolan.

He read the letter.

Then said, “See?”

One word.

The wrong word.

Ava stared at him.

“See what?”

“That she twisted everything.”

“No.”

Nolan stopped.

“She twisted one part. Don't use her lie to erase yours.”

His shoulders dropped.

That moment told Ava more about whether Nolan was changing than any apology so far.

He had still been waiting for evidence that would let him become less guilty.

He was not ready yet.
