Chapter 8 - Ava Made the Decision Nolan Feared Most
Nolan expected Ava to file for divorce immediately.
Sabrina expected Ava to expose them both publicly.
Diane expected Ava to eventually calm down.
Ava did none of those things.
She separated the finances she legally controlled.
She changed the deposit account for her paycheck.
She froze the joint credit line after notifying Nolan.
She moved her important documents to Grace’s house.
Then she scheduled marriage counseling.
Nolan looked stunned.
“You want counseling?”
“I want information.”
“That sounds clinical.”
“I’m eight months pregnant. Clinical is useful.”
She was not promising reconciliation.
She was refusing to make a permanent decision while furious, frightened, and weeks from giving birth.
That decision panicked Nolan more than divorce threats had.
Because divorce would tell him what came next.
Uncertainty forced him to live without control.
At their first counseling session, the therapist asked Nolan one question.
“What are you hoping Ava will understand?”
“That I love her.”
Ava looked away.
The therapist tried again.
“What are you afraid she’ll understand?”
That answer took longer.
“That I'm not who she thought I was.”
Ava finally looked at him.
For the first time, Nolan sounded frightened of truth rather than consequences.
He admitted there had been no clean moment when he “chose Ava” and stopped wanting anything from Sabrina.
After the reconciliation, he missed Sabrina.
Then felt ashamed.
Then returned once.
Then spent months pretending that because he stopped afterward, the final affair somehow mattered less.
Ava asked what would have happened if Sabrina never confronted them.
Nolan closed his eyes.
“I would've kept it buried.”
There was the answer.
Counseling had not saved anything.
It had removed one illusion.
Nolan had not been preparing to confess before the annex.
Sabrina forced the issue.
That mattered because Ava could not rebuild trust around a fantasy that Nolan had been “almost ready” to tell her.
After the session, Nolan asked whether Ava still planned to let him attend the birth.
She stopped.
That question had been coming.
“I don't know.”
His face changed.
