Chapter 12 - The Apology Sabrina Could Barely Finish
Sabrina requested permission to send one final statement before her case moved further through the legal process.
Ava agreed to receive it.
This time it was short.
Sabrina admitted three things without qualification.
She restrained Ava.
She intentionally frightened her.
She used Ava’s pregnancy and Nolan’s betrayal to humiliate her.
There was no “but.”
No explanation about grief.
No Nolan made me.
No Ava wouldn't listen.
Then Sabrina wrote about the old pregnancy.
She had hated Ava before meeting her.
Not because Ava stole Nolan.
Because Ava received the future Sabrina once expected.
Marriage.
Pregnancy.
A family.
When Nolan returned during his separation from Ava, Sabrina let herself believe history had corrected itself.
Then Nolan returned to Ava.
Again.
When Sabrina learned Ava was pregnant, old grief became resentment.
The money dispute gave her a reason to keep contacting Nolan.
She told herself she wanted repayment.
Part of her did.
Another part wanted Nolan unable to leave cleanly.
Ava finished the letter and sat quietly.
Grace asked whether she felt sympathy.
“Yes.”
“Does that change what she did?”
“No.”
That distinction mattered.
Ava sent one response through attorneys.
I understand more than I did. I still do not want contact.
Sabrina accepted it.
No dramatic reconciliation.
No friendship between betrayed women.
No shared revenge against Nolan.
They had both been hurt.
They had also both made choices.
Later that week, Nolan asked whether he could say something about Sabrina.
Ava braced herself.
“I used her grief too.”
Ava looked at him.
“When I went back in October, I knew she still had feelings for me. I told myself she understood it wasn't serious.”
“Did she?”
“No.”
That admission was important.
Nolan had spent months describing Sabrina as manipulative.
She was.
But he had also benefited from her hope before rejecting it.
For the first time, the three-person story stopped having one victim and two villains.
Ava remained the person who had been betrayed and endangered.
Sabrina had harmed her while carrying old wounds.
Nolan had harmed both women in different ways while avoiding himself.
