Chapter 6 - Nolan's Mother Took the Wrong Side
Ava told Nolan to move out.
He did.
No argument.
He rented a room in an extended-stay hotel ten minutes from work.
Then his mother, Diane, called Ava.
Ava expected support.
Instead Diane said, “Marriage survives worse things than one terrible mistake.”
Ava closed her eyes.
“It wasn’t one.”
“Nolan told me.”
“Which version?”
Silence.
That answered enough.
Diane had known about Sabrina.
Not everything.
But enough.
Nolan had called her after the December encounter, terrified Ava would find out.
Diane advised him never to tell Ava.
“Why?”
“Because he was done with Sabrina.”
“That wasn't your decision.”
“I was trying to save your marriage.”
Ava almost laughed.
There it was again.
Save the marriage.
As though the marriage were a building everyone could secretly repair while Ava continued living inside it.
Diane insisted Nolan loved her.
Ava did not dispute that.
Love was not the question.
Truth was.
Then Diane said something important.
“Sabrina had been threatening him before you two even separated.”
Ava sat straighter.
“What threats?”
“She said she would sue him for the business money.”
That contradicted Sabrina’s claim that the money became an issue only later.
Ava called Grace.
Then Sabrina.
Sabrina admitted she had raised the debt before the affair.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“You didn't ask.”
Ava disliked the answer.
It sounded technically true and emotionally dishonest.
The relationship between Nolan and Sabrina had been transactional before it became sexual again.
Sabrina wanted repayment.
Nolan wanted her silence and perhaps comfort.
Neither could cleanly separate the emotional history from the money.
Then Diane revealed one more thing.
Nolan had considered selling one of his rental properties to repay Sabrina completely.
He backed out when Ava became pregnant.
Why?
Because the property provided nearly $1,200 a month in income.
Money Nolan and Ava had been putting toward baby expenses.
Ava suddenly saw the triangle differently.
Nolan had not simply chosen Ava over Sabrina.
He had repeatedly chosen whichever short-term solution let him avoid losing something immediately.
Lose Sabrina?
Sleep with her during the separation.
Lose Ava?
Hide Sabrina.
Lose money?
Delay repayment.
Lose rental income?
Pay Sabrina in pieces.
Every decision postponed pain.
Each postponement made the eventual damage larger.
