Chapter 10 - What Nolan Had Really Been Hiding

The major shift came during the fourth counseling session.
Not from Sabrina.
Not from a document.
From Nolan finally answering a question he had avoided for months.
Why had he fought so hard against having children before Ava stayed with Grace in October?
The explanation Ava knew was practical.
Money.
Responsibility.
Fear.
That was only part of it.
Nolan and Sabrina had once tried to have a child.
Years earlier.
A pregnancy ended very early.
Ava had never known.
Nolan had not hidden a living child.
There was no secret family.
There was grief.
Unprocessed and badly handled.
After the loss, Sabrina wanted to try again.
Nolan did not.
Their relationship deteriorated.
The business collapsed soon afterward.
Money and grief became inseparable.
When Ava began discussing children years later, Nolan panicked.
He never told her why.
Ava interpreted his fear as rejection of a future with her.
She left for Grace’s house.
Nolan interpreted her leaving as the marriage ending.
Then he went to the one person connected to the fear he could not explain.
Sabrina.
That did not excuse the affair.
It reinterpreted it.
The old business debt was not merely financial.
The December encounter was not simply lust.
Sabrina’s fury when Ava became pregnant was not only jealousy.
And Nolan’s strange desperation to pay Sabrina after learning about Ava’s pregnancy was not simply an attempt to buy silence.
He was trying to close every part of a life he had never grieved honestly.
Ava sat across from him, stunned.
“You let me think you didn't want our baby.”
“I was terrified that wanting one meant losing one again.”
“You could have told me.”
“I know.”
“No. You knew then.”
Nolan started crying.
Quietly.
“Yes.”
That was the real betrayal underneath the others.
Not only that Nolan cheated.
He had repeatedly decided that other people could not be trusted with painful truths.
He chose concealment.
Then resented everyone for reacting to the consequences.
Ava suddenly understood Sabrina’s line in the annex differently.
You thought Nolan chose you.
Nolan had spent years treating relationships like choices between women.
Sabrina or Ava.
Past or future.
Debt or marriage.
But his deepest choice had always been the same.
Tell the truth—
May you like
or escape it.
And every time until now, he had escaped.
