Chapter 13 - The Day Ava Went Into Labor
Ava went into labor eleven days before her due date.
At two in the morning.
Grace drove.
Ava called Nolan from the car.
He answered on the first ring.
“Is it happening?”
“Yes.”
“Do you want me there?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
Nolan arrived before admission paperwork was complete.
He did not touch Ava until she reached for him.
That small hesitation nearly broke her.
The labor lasted fourteen hours.
There was no dramatic emergency.
No miraculous crisis that repaired their marriage.
Their daughter arrived healthy in the late afternoon.
Seven pounds, one ounce.
Blonde fuzz.
Angry lungs.
Perfectly ordinary newborn outrage.
Nolan cried.
Ava cried.
Grace cried harder than either of them.
For several hours, betrayal receded because something else required all the room.
Then night came.
The baby slept beside Ava.
Nolan sat near the window.
Ava looked at him.
“I don't want you moving home.”
His face tightened.
But he nodded.
“Okay.”
“You can be her father.”
“I will.”
“That isn't the same thing as being my husband again.”
“I know.”
Ava believed he finally did.
They discussed practical things.
Visits.
Night feedings.
Medical appointments.
Expenses.
Counseling.
No promises about reconciliation.
No dramatic reunion photograph.
Nolan slept in a chair for two hours and left when Ava asked him to.
The next morning, Diane visited.
She started to say something about babies healing families.
Ava stopped her.
“Our daughter is not responsible for fixing adults.”
Diane went quiet.
Then apologized.
That mattered too.
The family had spent months turning unborn possibilities into excuses.
The baby would not be one more.
When Ava held her daughter that afternoon, she realized something.
She had survived the annex.
She had uncovered the affair.
She had learned about the debt, the miscarriage, the lies, Sabrina’s resentment, Nolan’s avoidance.
And still the biggest decision remained hers.
Not whether Nolan was sorry.
