Chapter 11 - Understanding Nolan Made Ava Angrier

Ava expected understanding the miscarriage to make her softer.

Instead, for several days, she became angrier.

Because now Nolan’s secrecy looked less accidental.

He had opportunities.

Dozens.

When she asked why he feared children.

When they reconciled.

When she became pregnant.

When he began having nightmares during her first trimester.

When Sabrina resurfaced.

He could have told her.

He chose not to.

Grace understood.

“You can feel sorry for what happened to him and still hate what he did with it.”

That sentence helped.

Nolan began individual therapy in addition to marriage counseling.

Not as a condition Ava imposed.

His own decision.

That mattered.

He also listed the rental property for sale.

Ava objected at first.

“I don't want you making some grand sacrifice to prove something.”

“It isn't for you.”

The property sale would allow him to repay Sabrina’s remaining legitimate business contribution after attorneys reviewed the old records and reached a negotiated figure.

No emotional payment.

No silence.

No secret condition.

Just closing an actual debt.

Sabrina accepted the process through counsel.

Then Ava learned something about herself.

She had been focusing almost entirely on Nolan and Sabrina because deciding which one was worse kept her from asking what she wanted.

Did she want Nolan back?

Not whether he deserved another chance.

Whether she wanted it.

The answer was not simple.

She still loved him.

She no longer trusted him.

Both were true.

Her due date was three weeks away.

One evening Nolan came to Grace’s house with a small bag.

Inside were baby clothes.

Nothing expensive.

A hospital outfit.

A blanket.

Tiny socks.

He placed them on the table.

“I won't ask about the delivery again.”

Ava looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I realized I was treating it like something I had a right to.”

That was new.

He continued.

“If you want me there, call me. If you don't, I’ll be nearby.”

Ava touched the blanket.

“Don't make me reward you for finally respecting a boundary.”

“I won't.”

For once, he did not ask whether that meant she might forgive him.

He simply left.

Ava watched him go.

Trust had not returned.

But something had changed.

Nolan was beginning to understand that accountability did not guarantee access.
