Chapter 15 - The Place Where Ava Finally Chose

Seven months after the church annex, Ava returned to the parish.

Not for Sabrina.

For her daughter’s baptism.

She almost chose another church.

Then changed her mind.

She did not want one ugly afternoon to own the building forever.

The main sanctuary was bright that morning.

No dust.

No collapsed boxes.

No ropes.

No screaming.

The annex had been renovated.

New shelving.

Clean stone.

The old wooden beams remained.

Ava passed the doorway on the way to the fellowship hall and stopped.

Nolan was beside her carrying their daughter.

He did not ask whether she was okay.

He waited.

That was better.

Ava looked into the room where she had once sat pregnant on the floor while Sabrina told her Nolan had never really chosen her.

For months that sentence had controlled the story.

Eventually Ava understood why it was wrong.

Nolan choosing Ava was never supposed to be the final prize.

Sabrina choosing Nolan had not saved Sabrina.

Nolan choosing whichever relationship hurt least in the moment had destroyed trust.

The only choice Ava could actually control was her own.

She turned away from the annex.

At the reception afterward, Grace handed Ava a cup of coffee.

Diane held the baby.

Nolan stood nearby talking with the pastor.

He still lived separately.

He and Ava were still in counseling.

They had begun spending more evenings together.

No one called it reconciliation yet.

Ava preferred that.

Sabrina had respected the no-contact boundary after her final letter.

Whether Sabrina eventually found peace with what happened between her and Nolan was no longer Ava’s question to answer.

Nolan had changed in ways Ava could see.

Whether those changes would last for years rather than months remained the one thing she could not know yet.

Near the end of the afternoon, Nolan walked over.

“Our daughter just spit up on your mother.”

Ava smiled.

“Good. She’s developing standards.”

Nolan laughed.

Then his expression softened.

“Ready to go?”

Ava looked at him.

Months earlier, Sabrina had forced the question into cruel terms.

Who did Nolan choose?

Now Ava answered a different one.

What did Ava choose?

“Yeah.”

She took their daughter from Diane.

Nolan carried the diaper bag.

They walked toward the parking lot together.

Not pretending the marriage was repaired.

Not pretending it was over.

Behind them, the old annex door stood open.

Ava did not look back.
