Chapter 7 - The Date That Changed Everything
Ava reviewed the timeline with Grace because she no longer trusted emotional memory.
September: Ava and Nolan begin arguing about children.
October 3: Ava stays with Grace.
October 5, 8, and 11: Nolan sleeps with Sabrina, according to Sabrina.
October 13: Nolan tells Ava he wants to repair the marriage.
October 15: Ava returns home.
December 13: Nolan meets Sabrina again.
December 14: message admitting Ava believes the marriage is repaired.
January: Ava becomes pregnant.
April: Nolan quietly pays Sabrina $1,600.
July: Sabrina contacts him again.
August: two coffee meetings.
September: church annex.
One date bothered Ava.
January 22.
That was when she discovered she was pregnant.
Nolan had cried when she told him.
She remembered it perfectly.
He held her in the bathroom and laughed into her hair.
Three days later, bank records showed Nolan transferred $7,000 between his personal accounts.
Ava asked him about it.
He stared at the date.
Then remembered.
He had tried to repay Sabrina.
“Why right after I told you I was pregnant?”
“Because I knew I had to finish it.”
“Finish what?”
“Everything.”
But the payment never went through.
Why?
Sabrina had refused it.
Ava called her.
Sabrina confirmed it.
“I told him money wasn't enough anymore.”
“What did you want?”
“An apology.”
“You had one.”
“A real one.”
Ava waited.
Sabrina explained that Nolan had always framed their affair as something Sabrina tempted him into during weakness.
He apologized for hurting Ava.
For betraying his marriage.
But never for returning to Sabrina when lonely, then treating her like contamination once he wanted his marriage back.
That did not make Sabrina innocent.
It did make her anger more understandable.
Ava realized Sabrina had refused the payment because accepting it felt like accepting Nolan’s version—that the entire relationship could be reduced to a debt.
Nolan wanted to solve money.
Sabrina wanted him to admit he used her.
Ava wanted to know whether he could ever tell the truth before being cornered.
Three different conflicts had been tangled together.
And the church annex happened because each person believed the others were forcing the wrong question.
Ava looked at Nolan across Grace’s dining table.
“Did you love Sabrina?”
Nolan answered too quickly.
“No.”
Ava said nothing.
He tried again.
“I loved what she made me feel when I thought I was losing you.”
