Chapter 9 - The Question Of Where Ryan Belonged

Megan’s death created a real problem.

Not a dramatic one.

A practical one.

Ryan needed a permanent home.

Beth loved him.

But taking him indefinitely would strain her family.

Daniel was his legal father.

He had responsibilities.

And Ryan wanted him.

That did not automatically mean Ryan could simply move into my house.

Lily had been frightened by him.

I did not trust Daniel.

Ryan barely knew me.

A family therapist and child-welfare professionals helped establish a gradual plan.

Ryan would remain temporarily with Beth.

Daniel would have regular parenting time outside my home.

Ryan would continue grief counseling.

Any eventual introduction to Lily would happen only when both children were ready.

Daniel agreed.

For once, he did not promise something privately and expect everyone else to absorb it.

Then Ryan asked to speak to me.

His therapist supported a short meeting.

We met in her office.

Ryan looked smaller without anger.

He stared at his shoes.

“I’m sorry about Lily.”

“I know.”

“Is she scared of me?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

That answer hurt him.

I did not lie.

He whispered:

“I didn’t mean for her to get hurt.”

“I believe you.”

Ryan finally looked up.

“Do you hate me?”

My heart broke.

“No.”

“Mom said you didn’t want me.”

“Your mom believed what your dad told her.”

His face tightened.

“So she lied?”

“No.”

I chose my words carefully.

“She was told something that wasn’t true.”

“Dad lied?”

“Yes.”

Ryan looked toward the therapist.

Then back at me.

“About what?”

I took a breath.

“He told your mom that I knew you existed.”

Ryan went completely still.

“You didn’t?”

“No.”

His eyes filled.

“Ever?”

“I learned about you the day you came to my house.”

Ryan began crying.

Not loudly.

Just silent tears rolling down his face.

Then he asked:

“So all those years… you weren’t keeping him away from me?”

“No.”

That question exposed the damage more clearly than any financial record or photograph.

Daniel had not merely hidden Ryan.

He had given the boy someone else to blame.
