Chapter 13 - Lily Meets Her Brother Again

Four months passed before Lily saw Ryan.

The first meeting lasted twenty minutes.

Neutral playground.

Two therapists nearby.

Daniel remained at a distance.

So did I.

Ryan brought Lily something.

A new box of crayons.

He held it awkwardly.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily stayed beside me.

“For what?”

Ryan looked embarrassed.

“For scaring you.”

She studied him.

Then asked:

“Are you really my brother?”

Ryan nodded.

“Yeah.”

Lily frowned.

“You’re old.”

Ryan almost smiled.

“So?”

“My friend’s brother is a baby.”

That broke the tension.

Only slightly.

But enough.

They colored at a picnic table.

No forced hug.

No instant sibling bond.

No magical forgiveness.

Just two children being allowed to meet without carrying adult lies.

Later Lily asked me:

“Does Ryan live with Dad now?”

Daniel had rented a larger apartment.

Ryan was beginning overnight visits there while still staying primarily with Beth during the transition.

“Sometimes.”

“Will he live with us?”

My chest tightened.

“No.”

“Why?”

Because Daniel and I were separating.

I had not yet told Lily.

That evening, Nathan—our family therapist—helped us explain together.

Dad would live somewhere else.

Mom would remain at home with Lily.

Ryan would build his own relationship with Dad.

Lily cried.

So did Daniel.

I kept thinking about the irony.

Daniel hid Ryan because he feared truth would destroy our marriage.

In the end, the secrecy destroyed what the truth might have survived.
