Chapter 5 - Megan’s Side Of The Marriage
Beth gave me something Daniel didn’t have.
Megan’s old emails.
Not private access to everything.
Only messages Megan had previously forwarded to her sister during difficult periods.
The earliest was from eight years ago.
Ryan was two.
Megan wrote:
Daniel finally told Claire. She was upset but said he can keep seeing Ryan as long as we don’t disrupt their marriage.
I stared at the sentence.
It never happened.
Another:
Claire doesn’t want Ryan around future children. Daniel says give her time.
Future children.
Lily was still years away.
I had never said those words.
Then:
Daniel says Claire feels threatened by how close we used to be.
Again.
A conversation that never existed.
I had spent eight years being the villain inside a story I did not know was being told.
But Megan had not simply accepted everything.
Later messages became angrier.
Ryan is getting older. How long are we supposed to hide him?
Then:
I told Daniel I’m done lying to Ryan about why he can’t visit his father’s house.
And finally, eighteen months before Megan died:
If Claire really knows, I want to hear it from her.
That message hit me hardest.
Megan had begun suspecting something.
Maybe not the whole truth.
But enough.
I called Beth.
“Did Megan ever try to contact me directly?”
Beth hesitated.
“Once.”
“When?”
“About a year ago.”
“What happened?”
“She said Daniel asked her not to.”
My throat tightened.
“Why?”
“He told her you were going through something with Lily and that contacting you would blow up the family.”
Lily had been healthy.
Our marriage had been stable.
There had been no crisis.
Daniel simply needed one more excuse.
One more delay.
One more year.
I looked around my quiet kitchen.
Suddenly I understood the architecture of his secret.
Daniel did not maintain two families by creating one giant lie.
He created hundreds of small ones.
Each believable enough to survive one day.
