Chapter 11 - Daniel Tells The Bennett Family Himself
I could have exposed Daniel publicly.
I didn’t.
But I refused to help him hide anymore.
“You tell your family about Ryan.”
Daniel looked at me.
“All of them?”
“Yes.”
“What about the company?”
“That is your problem.”
He nodded.
A week later, Daniel called a family meeting.
His mother.
Two uncles.
His sister.
The trustees involved in the Bennett holdings.
I did not attend.
Ryan did not attend.
No child needed to sit in a room while adults debated whether his existence complicated money.
Daniel told them.
Ryan Cole was his biological son.
He had known since birth.
He had supported him privately.
He had hidden him from Claire.
He had maintained contact for eight years of his marriage.
And Megan was dead.
According to Daniel, his uncle’s first question was:
“Who else knows?”
Daniel finally answered correctly.
“That isn’t the important question.”
His mother cried.
Not because Ryan existed.
Because Daniel had repeated the same secrecy his father taught him.
Charles had insisted appearances mattered more than difficult truth.
Daniel spent years resenting him for it.
Then did the same thing to his own son.
The business consequences were less dramatic than Daniel had feared.
There were uncomfortable conversations.
Questions.
Legal review of estate documents.
But the company did not collapse.
Nobody lost everything overnight.
That fact devastated Daniel in a strange way.
He had sacrificed eight years to avoid a catastrophe that mostly existed in his imagination.
Ryan could have been acknowledged.
I could have been told.
Megan could have stopped carrying the secret alone.
Daniel simply never tested the fear.
