Chapter 6 - Daniel Explains The Beginning

Daniel agreed to meet with me and our marriage counselor.

Neutral room.

No Lily.

No Ryan.

I asked one question first.

“Why didn’t you tell me before we married?”

Daniel stared at his hands.

“Cowardice.”

I waited.

No childhood trauma.

No excuse.

Just cowardice.

He continued.

“Megan and I dated briefly. She got pregnant after we had already decided we weren’t going to stay together.”

“Did you know immediately?”

“Yes.”

“And you were involved?”

“Financially from birth. More personally after Ryan turned one.”

“Then you met me.”

“Yes.”

“Why hide him?”

Daniel swallowed.

“My father.”

That was new.

Daniel’s late father, Charles Bennett, had built the family investment firm.

Rigid.

Image-conscious.

Obsessed with reputation.

When Megan became pregnant, Charles told Daniel that acknowledging a child outside marriage would damage his future inside the company.

Daniel ignored him financially.

But publicly?

He complied.

Ryan was legally acknowledged.

Privately supported.

But never brought into Bennett family life.

Then Daniel met me.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“Early.”

“But?”

“I kept thinking if I told you after waiting too long, you’d leave.”

I stared.

“So every year you waited made telling me harder.”

“Yes.”

“And somehow that became a reason to wait another year.”

“Yes.”

It was pathetic.

And painfully believable.

“What did your father have to do with the lie after we married?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Less and less.”

Exactly.

Charles died five years ago.

Daniel remained silent anyway.

At some point, fear of his father stopped being the reason.

The lie became self-sustaining.

I asked:

“Did Megan know you were lying to me?”

“No.”

“You told her I knew.”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever tell Ryan I didn’t want him in our home?”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Not directly.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“I told him things were complicated because you weren’t ready.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“You used my name.”

“Yes.”

“So when he saw Lily…”

Daniel looked away.

“He thought she had the life you wouldn’t allow him to have.”

There it was.
