Chapter 8 - The Promise Megan Made Daniel Put In Writing

Megan had become less trusting near the end.
Beth found a document in her papers.
Not a will.
Not a secret custody order.
A signed letter from Daniel.
Dated fourteen months earlier.
It read:
If Megan dies or becomes unable to care for Ryan, I will immediately acknowledge my full relationship to Ryan within my household and participate openly in determining a safe permanent home for him.
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
Daniel had promised.
In writing.
That explained Ryan.
Megan must have shown him enough to make him believe his father would finally bring him home.
But there was another paragraph.
I will tell Claire the full truth before any transition involving Ryan occurs.
Daniel had signed it.
He had promised Megan I would know before Ryan ever came near my home.
Then Megan died.
And Daniel still didn’t tell me.
Instead, he met Ryan privately.
And according to Beth, told him:
“You’re not going to be alone. I’ll make room for you.”
To a grieving child, that sounded like home.
No wonder Ryan arrived expecting a place.
I confronted Daniel.
“You had fourteen months.”
“I know.”
“You signed this.”
“I know.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Daniel looked exhausted.
“Because every time I tried, I saw everything I could lose.”
I stared.
“Me.”
“Yes.”
“Lily.”
“Yes.”
“The marriage.”
“Yes.”
“What about Ryan?”
His face collapsed.
That was the question.
Daniel had spent years protecting what he could lose by risking the child who already lived without him.
He whispered:
“I convinced myself he was okay with Megan.”
“He was a child.”
“I know.”
“Children don’t get to negotiate whether being hidden hurts them.”
Daniel started crying.
I didn’t comfort him.

For years, every adult emotion in this secret had been treated as more important than Ryan’s.
That needed to end.
