Chapter 10 - Megan Had Discovered The Truth Before She Died
The biggest revelation came from Megan herself.
Beth found an unsent email draft on Megan’s laptop.
Dated eleven days before her death.
Addressed to me.
Claire,
I don’t know if Daniel will intercept this somehow, so I’m saving it until I decide how to contact you directly.
My hands shook.
Megan continued:
For years Daniel told me you knew about Ryan. Recently I started believing that might not be true.
She listed three things.
First, Daniel refused every request for us to speak directly.
Second, when Megan suggested Ryan send Lily a birthday card, Daniel panicked.
Third, Daniel once accidentally said:
“If Claire finds out now, she’ll never forgive me.”
Now.
Not if Claire gets upset.
If Claire finds out.
Megan heard it.
She finally understood.
The draft continued:
If you truly don’t know, then he has lied to both of us for almost your entire marriage.
There was no hatred toward me.
No affair confession.
No secret plan to steal Daniel back.
Just exhaustion.
Megan wrote:
I don’t want your husband. I want my son to stop believing he is somebody’s shame.
I cried when I read that.
Then came the twist that reinterpreted everything.
Eight months before her death, Megan had threatened to tell me herself.
Daniel begged her not to.
He promised that after the Bennett company completed a major ownership restructuring, he would disclose Ryan publicly.
Why wait?
Because Daniel still held shares inherited through his father’s estate under provisions that gave senior family trustees influence over voting control.
Not enough to erase Ryan legally.
Enough to make Daniel fear a family war.
His father had been dead for years.
But Daniel was still allowing Charles Bennett’s values to govern him from the grave.
Megan wrote:
Daniel keeps saying he is protecting Ryan’s future inheritance. I think he is protecting his own position.
That sentence changed the story.
Daniel had always described the secret as cowardice.
That was true.
But not complete.
He had also benefited from it.
No family scandal.
No questions from business partners.
No explanation for a son born before marriage.
No conflict with conservative trustees.
Daniel had been protecting his image while telling himself he was protecting everyone else.
And Megan had finally seen through it.
She planned to contact me.
Eleven days later, she died unexpectedly.
Daniel suddenly became the only adult who knew the entire story.
