Chapter 7 - Lily Asked Why Ryan Hated Her

Lily’s injury from the fall was minor.
Her fear was not.
For three nights, she asked whether Ryan was coming back.
On the fourth, she asked something worse.
“Does that boy hate me?”
I sat beside her bed.
“No.”
“He tried to hurt me.”
“He did something dangerous because he was extremely upset.”
“Why?”
Because your father lied to everyone.
Because Ryan lost his mother.
Because he thought you had stolen a family that should have included him.
None of that belonged inside a five-year-old.
So I said:
“He found out something very big and didn’t know how to handle his feelings.”
Lily frowned.
“Is Dad his dad?”
I stopped.
Children did not need every detail.
They deserved basic truth.
“Yes.”
“So he’s my brother?”
“Yes.”
Lily processed that.
Then whispered:
“Why didn’t I know I had a brother?”
There was no gentle version.
“Because Dad made a bad decision and kept something important secret.”
“Did you know?”
“No.”
She looked relieved.
That hurt more than I expected.
“Is Ryan bad?”
“No.”
“Is Dad bad?”
I took a long breath.
“People are more complicated than bad or good.”
Lily nodded like she understood.
She didn’t.
Neither did I.
Meanwhile Ryan had started grief counseling through Beth and his school.
His therapist recommended no immediate contact with Lily.
Good.
Safety first.
But Ryan sent me a note.
Beth asked if I wanted to read it.
I did.
Mrs. Bennett,
I’m sorry I scared Lily.
I thought you knew about me.
Dad said you didn’t want things to get messed up.
Mom said someday he would tell everyone.
I thought after Mom died he finally meant it.
I stared at one sentence for a long time.
I thought you knew about me.
Ryan had been raised believing I consciously excluded him.
That was not only a lie about me.
It was a lie about his own worth.
Daniel had taught his son that the reason he remained hidden was another woman’s discomfort.

The truth was uglier.
His father had been afraid.
