Chapter 14 - Eight Years Could Not Be Repaired In Eight Months

Daniel asked whether reconciliation was possible.

I did not answer immediately.

That surprised him.

Maybe he expected an instant no.

Part of me expected one too.

I still loved him.

That was inconvenient.

Betrayal does not automatically erase attachment.

Sometimes it simply makes love painful to carry.

We attended counseling.

Not to save the marriage at any cost.

To understand what remained.

Daniel stopped defending himself.

That helped.

He admitted each lie separately.

Megan.

Ryan.

Business trips.

Photographs.

Money.

Using my name as an excuse.

Allowing Ryan to believe I rejected him.

Promising Megan he would tell me.

Breaking that promise.

Then promising Ryan a home before speaking to me.

Eventually I asked:

“If Ryan had never said ‘Dad’ that afternoon, when would you have told me?”

Daniel stared at the floor.

“I don’t know.”

That answer decided more than he realized.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was honest.

There was still no point at which Daniel could say:

This is where I would definitely have chosen truth.

The marriage ended quietly.

No revenge campaign.

No attempt to take every dollar.

No public humiliation.

We separated assets through attorneys.

Created a parenting plan for Lily.

Daniel continued building a relationship with Ryan under appropriate guidance.

I asked for one thing outside the legal paperwork.

“Never make either child responsible for your guilt.”

Daniel nodded.

“I won’t.”

“Ryan does not owe you forgiveness because Megan died.”

“I know.”

“Lily does not owe you reassurance because our marriage ended.”

“I know.”

“And neither child gets told the other one destroyed their family.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

May you like

“I know.”

This time, I believed he understood.
