Chapter 9 - THE ACCOUNT BRANDON NEVER TOLD ANYONE ABOUT
Brandon arrived with a folder and no lawyer.
Sandra insisted on joining by phone.
Margaret sat beside Claire.
Brandon placed three bank statements on the table.
The separate account contained most of Claire’s support payments.
But he had not spent all of them.
Nearly eleven thousand dollars remained.
Margaret looked confused.
“If you had it, why was I paying for groceries?”
Brandon rubbed his forehead.
“I was saving.”
“For what?” Claire asked.
He did not answer.
Vanessa had been right.
There was another plan.
Brandon finally said, “A down payment.”
Claire stared at him.
“For a house?”
“For this house.”
Margaret went still.
“You don’t own it,” Claire said.
“I know.”
“Then explain.”
Brandon had convinced himself that Margaret would eventually leave.
Not because she wanted to.
Because he believed she could be made to want to.
He had been saving Claire’s monthly support money, part of Margaret’s “contributions,” and pieces of his severance.
His plan was to approach Claire with a lump sum once Margaret agreed she was “too old” to remain alone.
Then he would ask Claire to sell him the house below market value.
“Why would you think I’d do that?”
“Because you’d already paid most of it down.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“Because I’m your brother.”
Claire stared.
Margaret asked quietly, “Was the laundry room part of that?”
Brandon’s face changed.
“No.”
“Was making me cook?”
“No.”
“Taking my bedroom?”
“No.”
Margaret held his eyes.
“Was making me miserable part of getting me to leave?”
Brandon could not answer.
That was answer enough.
He had not ordered Vanessa to slap Margaret.
He had not planned every humiliation.
But he had tolerated each one because they moved the household toward the outcome he wanted.
Margaret leaving voluntarily.
Claire selling.
Brandon becoming the man who owned something again.
Claire looked at the money in the account.
The part he had saved did not make the rest better.
It made it worse.
He had not simply been desperate.
