Chapter 12 - THE FAMILY MEETING WITHOUT DINNER

Margaret chose the meeting place.

Claire’s townhouse.

Neutral enough.

Brandon came.

Vanessa came separately.

Sandra attended by video.

No one ate.

Margaret sat at the head of the table.

That was deliberate.

She looked first at Vanessa.

“Why did you hate me?”

Vanessa flinched.

“I didn’t.”

“Don’t waste my time.”

Vanessa looked down.

“You reminded me I was failing.”

Margaret waited.

“I lost the apartment. My cards were maxed. Brandon wasn’t working. Then I moved into a house another woman owned and watched you thank Claire for everything.”

Her mouth tightened.

“I felt like a guest in somebody else’s rescue.”

“So you made me smaller.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Margaret turned to Brandon.

“What did you want?”

He already knew the answer.

“The house.”

“No.”

Margaret shook her head.

“What did you want?”

Brandon stared at his hands.

“I wanted my life to count for something.”

Claire’s chest tightened.

He continued.

“I stayed when Dad got sick. Claire got promotions. I got calls at two in the morning because Dad couldn’t breathe.”

Claire whispered, “I know.”

“You sent money.”

“I know.”

“You always send money.”

The accusation landed.

Claire let it.

Brandon looked at Margaret.

“I thought the house was the one thing nobody could say I didn’t earn.”

Margaret’s voice went quiet.

“I never knew you thought taking care of your father was a purchase.”

Brandon looked away.

Finally Margaret turned to Claire.

“And what were you protecting?”

Claire did not expect the question.

She answered anyway.

“My belief that if I paid enough, everybody would be okay.”

Margaret nodded.

“You all made plans around me.”

That was the center of it.

Vanessa wanted control.

Brandon wanted compensation.

Claire wanted security.

Margaret wanted peace.

Every one of them had treated her silence as consent.

Margaret stood.

“I’m going home.”

Claire blinked.

“When?”

“Soon.”

“Mom, we can hire help—”

Margaret held up one hand.

Claire stopped.

Margaret almost smiled.

“That.”

“What?”

“You started planning again.”

Claire sat back.

May you like

Margaret was right.

The lesson had reached her too.
