Chapter 8 - CLAIRE SERVED THE NOTICE

Sandra prepared the notice terminating Brandon and Vanessa’s right to remain in the house.

Claire signed it.

Her hand shook.

Not because she doubted the decision.

Because paperwork could still feel like betrayal even when it enforced a boundary everyone had already broken.

Margaret watched from the kitchen table.

“What happens to them?”

“They’ll have time to find somewhere else.”

“How much time?”

“As much as the law requires and whatever Sandra negotiates.”

Margaret looked relieved.

Then guilty for being relieved.

Claire also stopped all direct support payments to Brandon.

If Margaret needed groceries, Claire would pay Margaret or the vendor directly.

No intermediaries.

That decision created an immediate reaction.

Brandon called Sandra.

Vanessa posted a vague message online about “family members using money to control vulnerable people.”

Several relatives called Margaret.

One aunt asked whether Claire was evicting her own mother.

That was Vanessa’s version.

Claire wanted to correct everyone.

Margaret stopped her.

“I want to do it.”

Claire looked at her.

“You don’t owe anybody an explanation.”

“I know.”

That was precisely why Claire let her.

Margaret called her sister Linda first.

Then two cousins.

Then her church friend, JoAnn.

She told the same plain story each time.

Claire owns the house.

I live there.

Brandon and Vanessa moved in temporarily.

I slept beside the laundry room.

Vanessa hit me.

Brandon knew more than I wanted to admit.

No dramatics.

No embellishment.

By the end of the weekend, the family group chat had gone quiet.

Brandon finally texted Claire.

You’ve destroyed my marriage.

Claire replied:

I wasn’t in your marriage.

His next message arrived instantly.

You have no idea what I was trying to do.

Claire stared at it.

Then responded:

Tell me.

No answer.

The next morning, Sandra called.

“Brandon wants to meet.”

“About moving out?”

“No.”

Sandra paused.

“He says there’s a financial explanation you haven’t heard.”

Claire almost laughed.

“There’s always another explanation.”

May you like

“Yes,” Sandra said.

“But this one may matter.”
