Chapter 7 - THE STORY VANESSA HAD BEEN SOLD

Vanessa called two days later.

Not to apologize.

To demand.

“You need to stop harassing Brandon.”

Claire almost hung up.

Instead she asked, “Who told you the house would become yours?”

Silence.

Then Vanessa laughed.

“What are you talking about?”

“You heard me.”

“This is ridiculous.”

“Was it Brandon?”

Vanessa’s voice changed slightly.

“That house was supposed to stay in the family.”

“It is in the family.”

“You know what I mean.”

“No. Explain it.”

Vanessa snapped, “Brandon took care of your parents for years. You bought the place because it was easier than dealing with your guilt.”

The accuracy of the insult surprised Claire.

Then Vanessa continued.

“Brandon said when Margaret was ready for assisted living, you’d either sell it to us cheap or let us take over the mortgage.”

Claire sat down.

“When did he say that?”

“For years.”

Years.

Before Brandon lost his job.

Before he moved in.

Claire thought back.

She had once told Brandon, casually, that if Margaret ever chose to move, they would “figure out what made sense.”

He had turned ambiguity into a future promise.

“You built your finances around something I never agreed to.”

Vanessa scoffed.

“You can afford two houses.”

There it was.

Entitlement dressed as arithmetic.

Claire asked, “Did Brandon tell you Mom was supposed to pay nine hundred a month?”

“That wasn’t rent.”

“What was it?”

“Contribution.”

“For living in a house where she has the right to live rent-free?”

Vanessa went quiet.

Claire continued.

“Did he tell you I send six hundred a month for Mom’s groceries?”

Longer silence.

“No.”

Claire believed her.

That did not absolve Vanessa.

But it changed the shape of the betrayal again.

Before hanging up, Vanessa said, “Ask your brother what happened to the money.”

“I am.”

“No.”

Her voice became sharp.

“Ask him what he was really saving for.”

The call ended.

Claire stared at her phone.

Brandon had said they were avoiding bankruptcy.

Vanessa had just suggested something else.

That night, Claire requested copies of the checks she had sent Brandon during the first two months before switching to electronic transfers.

One endorsement caught her attention.

The money had not gone into Brandon and Vanessa’s joint account.

It had gone into a separate account in Brandon’s name only.
