Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN BESIDE THE BROKEN PLATES

Claire Dawson heard the slap before the grocery bag left her hand.

By the time she stepped fully into her mother’s kitchen in Aurora, Colorado, Vanessa’s palm was still inches from Margaret’s face.

Margaret stood beside a shattered dinner plate, gray hair coming loose from its clip, one hand pressed against her cheek.

“You’re the maid here,” Vanessa said. “Start acting like one.”

Claire dropped the bag.

A jar of pasta sauce rolled beneath the table.

Vanessa drew back for another slap.

Claire crossed the kitchen in three strides and caught her wrist.

“Don’t.”

Vanessa jerked free and shoved Claire by the shoulder.

“This is my house, and your mother stays here because I allow it.”

Claire stumbled against the dining table.

Behind Vanessa, Brandon stood at the sink.

Claire’s older brother.

Margaret’s son.

He looked frightened.

He also looked away.

That hurt more than Claire expected.

Claire stepped between Vanessa and Margaret.

On the floor near the laundry-room doorway sat a neatly folded blanket and a thin pillow.

Claire stared at them.

“Mom.”

Margaret immediately said, “It’s temporary.”

“What is?”

Nobody answered.

Claire looked toward the side table.

The folder she had brought over three months earlier was still there.

She grabbed it, opened to the first page, and slammed it onto the table.

“Read the owner’s name before you call this yours again.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Brandon stepped closer.

At the top of the property record was Claire’s name.

Claire Dawson.

Sole owner.

Vanessa snatched for the page.

Claire held it down.

Then she pulled the second document halfway free.

“And this one explains why Mom was never supposed to—”

Vanessa lunged across the table.

Brandon grabbed her wrist.

For the first time that evening, he stopped protecting his wife.

“Vanessa,” he said.

His voice was barely audible.

“Don’t let her show Mom that.”

Claire turned toward him.

Margaret lowered her hand from her cheek.

“Show me what?”

May you like

Claire looked at her brother.

Whatever Brandon feared was not the deed.
