Chapter 4 - THE FIRST THING CLAIRE STOPPED PAYING

Claire did not confront Brandon immediately.
For once, she wanted facts before anger.
She called the attorney who had prepared the occupancy agreement.
Sandra Mills explained that Brandon and Vanessa had remained past the original six-month period, meaning Claire needed proper notice rather than simply changing locks.
“Even if they violated the agreement?”
“Document it. Then we proceed correctly.”
Claire appreciated the answer.
Slow was better than sloppy.
Next she called her bank.
The monthly six-hundred-dollar transfers to Brandon stopped that afternoon.
Then Claire asked Margaret to show her six months of account statements.
The pattern was ugly.
Cash withdrawals after every Social Security deposit.
Utility payments larger than previous years.
Several payments to Vanessa’s credit card.
Margaret pointed at those.
“She said they were household purchases.”
“Did you see receipts?”
“No.”
Claire looked at her mother.
“Why didn’t you call me?”
Margaret’s eyes filled.
“Because I thought you were already angry at me.”
“For what?”
“Needing the house.”
Claire sat back.
That sentence hurt.
The house had never been charity.
After her father died, Claire had wanted Margaret somewhere stable.
But over the years she had begun talking about the mortgage too often.
Not cruelly.
Still often enough.
“I complained,” Claire said.
Margaret nodded reluctantly.
“When property taxes went up.”
“I complained about the taxes.”
“You said the house was costing more than you expected.”
“That wasn’t the same thing as saying you were a burden.”
“I know that now.”
Claire did not defend herself.
Intent did not erase what Margaret had heard.
That evening Brandon discovered the transfer had stopped.
His text arrived within minutes.
What are you doing?
Claire replied:
Accounting.
His answer came immediately.
Mom needs that money.
Claire stared at the message.
Then typed:
Apparently she never got it.
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Finally:
Vanessa handles groceries.
Claire wrote:
Then send eight months of receipts.
Brandon stopped responding.

For the first time since she entered the kitchen, Claire knew exactly which part of the truth frightened him.
Money.
