Chapter 11 - WHEN VANESSA STOPPED BEING THE ONLY VILLAIN
Vanessa moved into a hotel before the notice period ended.
Not because Claire asked her to leave early.
Because she and Brandon could no longer stay in the same room.
She sent Margaret a written apology.
Margaret read it once.
Then folded it.
Claire asked, “Do you believe her?”
Margaret considered.
“I believe she’s sorry she lost control of the story.”
That was more perceptive than Claire expected.
Vanessa admitted hitting Margaret.
She admitted calling her a maid.
She admitted making her cook and clean.
But she also insisted Brandon had created the belief that Margaret was temporary.
Both things could be true.
That was the difficult part.
Victims and perpetrators did not always stay in separate boxes.
Vanessa had been manipulated.
She had also chosen cruelty.
Brandon had rarely raised his voice.
He had also engineered the conditions that made Margaret feel unwanted.
Claire had meant to provide security.
She had also allowed money to replace presence more often than she wanted to admit.
Margaret had been mistreated.
She had also hidden it because protecting Brandon felt more important than protecting herself.
Nobody left the story perfectly innocent.
That week, Claire met with a financial adviser and reviewed every payment connected to Margaret’s household.
Brandon agreed through Sandra to return the remaining eleven thousand dollars immediately.
The rest would need to be reconstructed.
Some had gone toward legitimate groceries and utilities.
Some to Brandon’s expenses.
Some to Vanessa’s debt.
Some could not yet be cleanly identified.
There would be no dramatic check restoring everything.
Just records.
Calculations.
Repayment negotiations.
The police report from the kitchen assault also moved forward.
Margaret gave a statement.
Claire provided photographs from urgent care.
Nobody promised what prosecutors would do.
Margaret was satisfied with that.
Then Claire learned something that hurt in a different way.
Margaret did not want to move back into the Aurora house yet.
“I thought you wanted your home back.”
“I do.”
“Then why—”
“Because I don’t know how to stand in that kitchen without waiting for somebody to tell me what I’m doing wrong.”
Claire stopped.
