Chapter 10 - BRANDON NEEDED HIS MOTHER TO LEAVE

The major twist became clear when Vanessa forwarded Claire three years of messages.
She did it after Brandon told her he wanted a separation.
Vanessa’s motive was not noble.
She was furious.
The messages were still real.
Three earlier details changed at once.
First, Brandon’s passivity whenever Vanessa belittled Margaret had not been cowardice alone.
He had repeatedly encouraged it in private.
Stop doing everything for her.
She needs to realize this setup can’t last forever.
Second, Vanessa believed the house would become theirs because Brandon had told her it was practically decided.
Claire won’t keep paying forever.
Mom will move eventually.
Once she does, Claire will work something out with me.
Third, the folded bedding beside the laundry room was not Vanessa’s idea.
Brandon had suggested converting the main bedroom into “their space” so Margaret would begin adjusting to something smaller.
One message made Margaret cover her mouth.
If Mom gets comfortable being in less space, assisted living won’t feel like such a jump.
Claire felt sick.
Brandon had spent years carrying resentment from their father’s illness.
He believed caring for their parents had cost him promotions, money, and opportunities Claire had been free to pursue.
He never asked Claire to repay him.
Instead, he built an internal ledger.
The house became the number he assigned to what he believed he was owed.
Vanessa had embraced the fantasy because she wanted security.
Then she became cruel enough to enforce it.
Brandon did not stop her because cruelty served his plan.
Margaret whispered, “He wanted me gone.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
She had finally understood the uglier truth.
“He wanted you to choose to go so he could tell himself he never forced you.”
Margaret began crying.
Claire sat beside her.
For months Claire had blamed herself for not visiting enough.
That guilt remained.
But now another mistake was visible.
She had trusted Brandon because he had once been the reliable child.
The son who drove Dad to chemotherapy.
The brother who fixed things without being asked.
Claire had mistaken past sacrifice for permanent character.
That evening Brandon called.
Margaret answered.
“Mom, Vanessa’s twisting everything.”
Margaret listened.
Then said something Claire had never heard her say to either child.
“No.”
A pause.
“No explanation tonight.”
Another pause.
“No, Brandon.”
Her voice strengthened.
“You don’t get to tell me what you meant. I already lived through what you did.”
May you like
Then she hung up.
For the first time, Margaret was no longer asking which child she needed to protect.
