Chapter 9 - The Previous Girlfriend Nobody Had Asked About
Owen contacted Megan two months later.
He had remembered a name.
Sarah.
Dustin’s former girlfriend.
She used to come to the gym.
Then suddenly stopped.
Warren always said the breakup was messy.
Megan did not contact Sarah directly.
Her attorney did.
Sarah initially wanted nothing to do with it.
Then she learned Megan had gone to the emergency room.
She agreed to speak privately.
Her experience was not identical.
That mattered.
Dustin had never hospitalized Sarah.
But she described the same emotional pattern.
Jealousy.
Isolation.
Public humiliation followed by private apologies.
Blocking doors during arguments.
Taking her phone once.
Telling people she was unstable after they separated.
Sarah had never reported him.
“I thought it wasn’t serious enough.”
Megan cried when she heard that.
She had used the exact same phrase.
Not serious enough.
Until it was.
Sarah’s account did not magically prove every allegation Megan made.
But it challenged Dustin’s public claim that Megan had invented his controlling behavior after their breakup.
There was a prior pattern.
Warren remembered Sarah too.
That damaged his credibility more than anything else.
He had watched one relationship deteriorate around Dustin.
Then another.
Still, he insisted he had never seen clear physical abuse.
Ray believed him.
That was almost worse.
The warning signs had remained just ambiguous enough that everyone could choose convenience.
Then Sarah revealed something unexpected.
Dustin had once told her why he hated appearing weak.
His father had mocked him constantly as a teenager.
Called him soft.
Forced him into wrestling after school bullies targeted him.
Dustin built his entire identity around never being powerless again.
Megan listened quietly.
Then said, “I feel sorry for the kid he was.”
Ray looked at her.
“But?”
“I’m still afraid of the man he became.”
That was the distinction the family needed.
Understanding Dustin did not require excusing him.
