Chapter 12 - Dustin’s Last Attempt to Rewrite the Story
Dustin eventually gave an interview.
He never named Megan.
Everybody knew.
He said relationships were complicated.
He admitted he had “handled conflict poorly.”
He denied being an abuser.
Then he said something Ray expected.
“Her father intimidated everyone around the situation.”
Megan watched the interview once.
Then turned it off.
Ray was furious.
She wasn’t.
“He needs you to be the story.”
Ray remembered her saying that months earlier.
Dustin continued portraying himself as a man whose career had been damaged by powerful outsiders.
But his problem was no longer Ray.
Warren had records of disciplinary incidents.
Owen and others had their own observations.
Sarah had her experience.
Megan had medical documentation and messages.
No single person controlled the entire truth.
That made it harder for Dustin to destroy by attacking one witness.
Then Dustin said publicly:
“I never stopped anyone from leaving.”
Megan’s hands went cold.
She remembered the doorway.
The blocked exits.
Her phone being taken.
Every time he stood between her and a door while insisting he was only trying to “finish the conversation.”
Her attorney asked whether she wanted to respond publicly.
“No.”
Ray looked surprised.
Megan explained.
“I spent a year reacting to him.”
She took a breath.
“I’m done letting him decide when I speak.”
That was power Ray understood only after watching his daughter discover it.
