Chapter 5 - The Message Dustin Never Expected Megan to Keep

Megan had deleted almost everything.
That was what Dustin told her to do after every fight.
“You keep screenshots because you love being a victim.”
So she deleted them.
Most of them.
One message survived because Megan had forwarded it months earlier to her college friend Rachel.
It was from Dustin.
You embarrass me again in front of my gym and next time I won’t stop myself.
Megan had sent Rachel only one sentence underneath.
Is this normal when someone’s under fight stress?
Rachel had replied immediately.
No.
Megan still stayed.
Ray struggled to understand that.
He knew better than to say so carelessly.
His daughter’s therapist later helped him understand.
Megan had not remained because she enjoyed being hurt.
She remained because every frightening incident was followed by a different Dustin.
Apologetic.
Tender.
Ashamed.
Then another period of calm.
Megan kept waiting for the good version to become permanent.
Ray recognized something uncomfortable.
He had unknowingly reinforced that hope.
Whenever Megan complained Dustin was controlling, Ray responded:
“He’s intense. That’s probably why he’s successful.”
He thought he was encouraging patience.
Megan heard permission.
“I should’ve listened better,” Ray told her.
“You didn’t know.”
“I knew enough to ask better questions.”
That distinction mattered to him.
He refused to make himself responsible for Dustin’s actions.
He also refused to pretend he had never missed warning signs.
Then Rachel produced another message Megan had sent.
Eight months earlier.
Dad would kill Dustin if he knew how he talks to me.
Ray read it twice.
Megan had feared telling him not only because of Dustin.
Because of Ray.
His reputation.
His temper when protecting family.
His entire identity as a man who knew how to fight.
Ray finally understood the cruel irony.
The skills he believed made Megan safer had partly convinced her she could not safely tell him the truth.
If she disclosed abuse and Ray attacked Dustin, she might lose control of her own story again.
So Ray made his daughter a promise.
“I will not touch him.”
Megan studied his face.
“Even if he laughs at you?”
May you like
“He already did.”
For the first time since the hospital, Megan smiled.
