Chapter 7 - The Man Sergeant Miller Had Really Come to Confront

Ray returned to the gym once.

This time Warren invited him.

Dustin was not present.

Owen was.

So were three senior fighters.

Warren looked exhausted.

“I should’ve handled things differently.”

Ray sat across from him.

“What things?”

Warren hesitated.

“That’s fair.”

He admitted Dustin had received more chances than other fighters.

Dustin brought attention to the gym.

He won.

Winning created tolerance.

Not for beating Megan.

Warren insisted he never knew about that.

But for everything around it.

Explosive anger.

Humiliation.

Threats disguised as jokes.

Ray listened.

Then asked, “Would you let a rookie behave like that?”

Warren looked down.

“No.”

“Then you knew the standard.”

That was the issue.

Warren had not needed to know every detail of Megan’s relationship to recognize that he was rewarding one athlete for conduct he would punish in another.

Owen spoke next.

“I laughed when Sergeant Miller walked in.”

Ray looked at him.

“So?”

“I’m saying I was part of it.”

One of the other fighters shifted uncomfortably.

Owen continued.

“We saw an old guy and thought Dustin would embarrass him.”

Ray almost smiled.

“You probably could.”

Owen frowned.

“What?”

“I’m sixty-four. Dustin is thirty-six and competes professionally.”

The room went silent.

Ray continued.

“This isn’t a movie.”

That sentence changed the atmosphere.

Ray’s history did not make him invincible.

Training did not stop age.

Experience did not guarantee victory against a younger professional athlete.

And none of it mattered.

“I didn’t walk in because I thought I could beat him.”

Ray looked around the room.

“I walked in because my daughter thought men like you would automatically believe him over her.”

Owen’s face tightened.

“That’s what I wanted to know.”

Ray stood.

“Was she right?”

Nobody answered immediately.

They didn’t need to.

Some of them had already shown her the answer.

Now they had to decide whether they would keep showing it.
