Chapter 2 - What Megan Had Been Hiding From Her Father

Megan Miller was thirty-two.

She had met Dustin fourteen months earlier.

At first, Ray liked him.

Dustin was confident without appearing arrogant around family.

He carried groceries for Megan’s mother, Carol.

He asked Ray questions about the Marines.

He even joked that he would never spar with the old man because “I’d lose Christmas privileges.”

Then small things changed.

Megan stopped coming to Sunday dinner.

She quit the running club she had belonged to for six years.

She began answering Dustin’s questions before Ray finished asking hers.

Ray noticed.

He misunderstood.

He thought his daughter was building an adult life and wanted less involvement from her father.

So he backed away.

Dustin encouraged that.

“Your dad still treats you like you’re seventeen.”

Megan started believing it.

The first time Dustin grabbed her hard enough to leave bruises, he apologized before she even processed what happened.

The second time, he blamed alcohol.

The third time, he blamed her.

Then came the night that put Megan in the emergency room.

She told the nurse she fell down the stairs.

Ray believed her for eleven hours.

Then Megan called him crying.

“I lied.”

He drove to her apartment.

She could barely look at him.

“Dustin did it.”

Ray’s first instinct was violent.

Years of training rushed through his body.

Megan saw it.

“No, Dad.”

That stopped him.

“If you go hurt him, then everything becomes about what you did.”

Ray sat down.

His hands were shaking.

“What do you want me to do?”

Megan whispered, “Believe me.”

So he did.

The next morning, they began documenting what already existed.

Medical records.

Messages.

Photographs Megan had taken months earlier but never shown anyone.

Not because Ray wanted revenge.

Because for the first time, Megan was preparing to stop protecting Dustin.

Then she told him something else.

“People at his gym have seen him lose control.”

Ray looked up.

“Who?”

“I don’t know who would admit it.”

That was why Ray walked into Dustin’s gym.

Not to prove an old Marine could still fight.

To find out whether an entire room of trained men had watched Dustin become dangerous and decided it wasn’t their problem.
